Dear Sir,
I have been reading your article and I have to say your right on the money but have no thoughts that the Philippines will be anything but as you see it now. Sir the way things are here, the corruption and ignorance goes from the bottom up. Every person here, no matter where their from, thinks foreigners are rich and subject to scamming, whether family members neighbors anybody they have a complete ignorance to right or wrong. Even if you changed the Government completely to an honest one it would not work, scamming and corruption is just too ingrained. In history some societies are meant to die off because they just don't work or a tyrant takes over with only a Pol Pot mentality that murders, scourges and burns out every bad aspect of that society until there is almost nothing left.
Its a shame to say these things but I would not be surprised if the Philippines were annexed by China or Vietnam even better Japan, who then forced every member of society to adhere to the letter of the law or else.
The Philippines cannot govern itself and that is a matter of fact. I have spent the last few years in retirement here and a few years during the 1980s and I only see a worsening problem. Never I have I ever seen such complete ignorance in a society that has all the conveniences of a modern society (internet, cable TV, access to world knowledge). I still have arguments with Philippine college graduates how the U.S. dollar goes 50 times farther here than in the states, that argument happens often and these are people with degrees.
I know now why foreigners stay to themselves and don’t make friends with the locals; it will end up costing you big time. I do help children that are not responsible for what goes on and they are the true victims here. I help out until of course the parents lie or cons or tries to steal from me then I cut them off.
Believe it or not, a lot of people want the crook, Erap for President again, enough said of the intelligence level here in the Philippines.
