The Philipinos are good at keeping foreigners from hearing the true crime and unusually high pedophile crime rates in their country.
How do they do it? They simply switch to using the Tagalog language on TV and in their papers. What is very irritating is to be watching an English news broadcast and they suddenly switch to Tagalog. You know they switched to hide truth that you should be entitled to hear!

WOW" it took 2 days after the Daniel Smith verdict, for the Philippine news media to get over the shock of the ruling, It was almost like they could not believe that their Court of Appeals actually went against a long time unwritten,unspoken rule of law that has been in place since the downfall of Ferdinand Marcos, and freed an American!
The bigots, racist, hate groups and prejudice politicians of the Philippines are going crazy! They are saying that the Court of Appeals has committed a "cardinal sin" and should be impeached, tarred feathered an ran out of the Philippines! Some filipinos and politicians even called it treason!
I only found maybe 3 written Daniel Smith articles in English on the web, the other maybe 100 or more articles are all written in Tagalog even the TV commentaries are in Tagalog to keep the English speaking world from knowing what they are saying and believe me, they are saying a whole lot!'
But, the turning point in this case was the woman's deposition, retracting her charge of rape against Smith an effectively killing the case along with a little Presidential influence, because President Arroyo knows Barack Obama,and Hillary are watching. Being a black man, we know at sometime in his life Barack Obama has been expose to racial hate, prejudice and bigotry! After all that's what this case was about from the very being, and a finding up-holding Smith's conviction by the Court of Appeals would demonstrate without a doubt the serious racism problem in the Philippines, especially in its courts and law enforcement.
This would have caused a serious break in U.S., Philippine relations! And we all know, whatever position the U.S. takes, many other countries will follow.
To be labeled as a "Asian Apartheid South Africa" by the Obama administration could have been a death sentence for Overseas Filipino Workers ((OFW)), killed tourism, wrecked international trade, cut world bank financial support, end Military equipment and other aid from the U.S., etc etc etc.....not to mention the way all Filipinos in the U.S. and around the world would have been viewed
I have to applaud Arroyo for not being as stupid and narrow minded as many of her fellow Politicians. Many thought she should have stepped in at the beginning to influence at very least the type of criminal charges in this case!
What is the reality to this story? If the Philippine Government authorities had not acted out of racial hate and charged Smith with a lesser offense other then "Rape", convicted, sentenced and maybe fined him a reasonable sum befitting the crime, the U.S. Government would have discharged Smith from the U.S. military for "conduct unbecoming a U.S. Marine" and turned him over to Philippine authorities, JUSTICE would have been served, and all this 4 years of drama could and would have been avoided! But racial hate knows no justice and this was the end result!
